Free museums in Rome

In Rome, many museums offer free entry, but each institution has its own rules: at the Colosseum you queue at the ticket office, at the Vatican Museums the right Sunday is the last. Here are the dates until January and how each works.

Free days in Rome come in three types. The first Sunday of the month state museums and archaeological parks, from the Colosseum to the Pantheon, are free, and in 2026 the civic museums are free too. The last Sunday of the month is for the Vatican Museums, which only open in the morning. And some national holidays, like 4 November, the Colosseum is free.

Free does not mean no queue. Below you will find the dates until early 2027, where booking is required and where it is not, and for whom entry is free every day. The prices for normal days are in the guide to attraction tickets.

The short answer

On the first Sunday of the month, Rome’s state museums are free, including the Colosseum, Pantheon, Castel Sant'Angelo and Galleria Borghese, and in 2026 the civic museums too. Next dates: 1 November, 6 December and 3 January 2027; 4 November is free at the Colosseum. The Vatican Museums are free on the last Sunday of the month from 9:00 to 14:00: 25 October and 29 November 2026. At the Colosseum, the free Sunday ticket cannot be booked; it is collected on site.

When can you enter Rome’s museums for free from October to January?

25 October and 29 November at the Vatican Museums; 1 November, 6 December and 3 January 2027 at state museums; 4 November at the Colosseum.

The dates come from official rules: first Sunday for the state, last Sunday for the Vatican, plus the Colosseum’s national holidays. 4 November 2026 falls on a Wednesday, the only free weekday in the period.

Sunday 27 December would be the last of the month, and according to the Vatican Museums’ rule it should be free: free entry is only skipped if the last Sunday falls on Easter, 29 June, 25, 26 or 31 December. However, the date is not yet confirmed by the Museums’ official calendar.

How does the first Sunday of the month work at the Colosseum?

Entry is free, but the ticket cannot be booked: you collect it in person at the ticket office, in order of arrival, and it is valid only for that day.

This is the most popular free Sunday and also the busiest. The Colosseum Archaeological Park distributes free tickets on the spot, to those who arrive first, and the ticket collected is valid only for that day. Those with the Roma Pass can collect it like everyone else.

Two things do not work on that Sunday. The Forum Pass SUPER cannot be used and the Domus Aurea is closed every first Sunday of the month. From late October, the winter hours also apply: closing at 16:30, last entry at 15:30. On 1 November and 6 December it is best to be there at opening time.

If the free day does not coincide with your trip, the simplest way is to book: the guided tour includes the €18 ticket and gives you a guaranteed time slot.

Which other state museums in Rome are free on the first Sunday?

The Pantheon, Castel Sant'Angelo, the Galleria Borghese, Ostia Antica, the Appia Antica and Villa d'Este in Tivoli. Each has its own way of distributing tickets.

The national rule is called #domenicalmuseo and applies with the usual opening hours. At the Pantheon, free tickets are collected at the counters and totems on site, without priority access. At Castel Sant'Angelo and Ostia Antica, no booking is required.

The Galleria Borghese is an exception: there, booking is required for every ticket, even the free ones, and visits last two hours per time slot. It is closed on Mondays. Villa d'Este, in Tivoli, is also free on 8 March, 25 April, 2 June and 4 November.

If you have only one Sunday, choose one place and arrive early: Pantheon and Colosseum on the same free day means two queues. What to see on other days, and in what order, is in the guide to things to do in Rome.

At the Pantheon on a normal day? The ticket with the official audio guide has a fixed time and can be cancelled for free up to 24 hours before.

Are Rome’s civic museums free on the first Sunday in 2026?

Yes, for everyone, from 1 January to 31 December 2026 and until seats are exhausted. The exhibition halls of Villa Caffarelli at the Capitoline Museums, the Ara Pacis and the first floor of Palazzo Braschi are excluded.

The Musei in Comune are those of Roma Capitale: the Capitoline Museums, Trajan's Markets, Centrale Montemartini, the Circus Maximus and others. In 2026, on the first Sunday of the month, entry is free for everyone, residents and tourists, with the three exceptions of the exhibition spaces.

For residents of Rome and the Metropolitan City, Sunday does not matter: from February 2026 they enter free all year round. Four museums are always free for everyone: the Museum of the Roman Republic, the Museum of the Walls, Casal de' Pazzi and Casa Moravia. The other new features of the City are in the article on what changes in Rome in 2026.

When are the Vatican Museums free?

The last Sunday of the month, from 9:00 to 14:00, with last entry at 12:30. The next ones are 25 October and 29 November 2026.

On other Sundays, the Vatican Museums are closed. On the last Sunday of the month, they open for free, but only in the morning, and you cannot book online: the only exception is guided tours. This means a single queue for everyone and five hours of opening.

The dress code also applies that day, in the official wording: «Sleeveless and/or low-cut clothing, shorts above the knee, miniskirts and hats are not allowed». In the Sistine Chapel, no photos or videos are allowed, and silence is requested.

On other days, the ticket costs €20, €25 with online booking; children under 7 do not pay. If you want the Sistine Chapel before the crowds, the first morning entry with a guide is the most convenient choice.
